This one sounds a lot better than my previous source Man Chester United Journey - it's louder and cleaner. But still - a lot of cuts like before in nearly all tracks make it quite difficult to listen to. Just for hardcore fans and collectors. ---------------------------------------- Source: Audience CD Reference: Manchester 22.6.69, Man Chester, The Man and the Journey (ayanami) LP Reference: Comments: (from 'Embryo - A Pink Floyd Chronology' by Hodges & Priston) 62:55, The Man 22:41 [Daybreak 2:51, Work 1:05, Afternoon 3:39, Doing It 2:01, Sleeping 5:20, Nightmare 7:25] The Journey [The Beginning 5:37, Beset By Creatures Of The Deep 7:13, The Narrow Way 5:25, Behold The Temple Of Light 1:51, The End Of The Beginning 8:02], Set The Controls 11:06 The above timing represents a suggested version of the tape following the method set out below. The collector is likely to receive a 65 min. 7 sec. copy. The extra few minutes reflect duplicated music. Manchester was either recorded by a nervous recorder or - more likely - one with a dodgy tape player. Alternatively, we suppose it could be the case that there is a more complete master. The person recording hits the pause button during 'Daybreak' 2 min. 11 sec. in, and again after 2 min. 36 sec. The track then cuts and continues at 2 min. 51 sec. Oops! 'Work' also cuts (after 1 min. 5 sec) - sadly, as it is a unique recording. Starting with an explosion, it proceeds through Schoenbergian percussion which was evidentl panned through the Azimuth Coordinator. 'Afternoon' also highlights the band's quadraphonics, but sadly joins its predecessors by cutting after 2 min. 41 sec., then continuing for a further 58 seconds. Before the cut we have the pastoral, after quadraphonic mayhem - with no idea of how the two were juxtaposed. Distortion becomes particularly noticable during 'Afternoon' and rarely departs altogether for the rest of the tape. In the first of several reactions the observer seems to turn his or her recording level down part way through the track and there is another nervous pause after 2 min. 22 sec. 'Doing It' sadly cuts after 26 seconds and a radio DJ is heard saying 'now it's news time' (not part of the concert, kids!). It then continues for a further 1 min. 35 sec. but is blighted by an intermittently wandering tape azimuth. There then follows another semi-silent cut of 16 seconds, during which the radio music can be heard from the same radio programme. Most likely the person recording the concert was re-using an old tape, and this effect is a concequence of the incomplete erasure of the original recording. 'Sleeping' is complete (except perhaps for a few bars of breathing), the tape azimuth has recovered; the distortion subsides, and it segues unblemished into 'Nightmare'. Is the recording blight to be over? No, sadly. 'Nightmare' breaks after 4 min. 54 sec. for a few seconds and then again after a further 2 min. 26 sec., never to return. The three-second break cannot be rejoined as it occurs during an instrumental section and resumes mid-chorus. 'Nightmare's' healthy start gives way to heavy distortion. The total time for 'The Man' is 22 min. 41 sec., representing tape time elapsed. We are inclined to remove the poor edits leaving us with 22 min. 22 sec. As 'Nightmare' cuts we immediately jump to well-balanced seagull effects, marking the opening of 'The Beginning'. The recording progresses happily through 'The Beginning', into 'Beset By Creatures Of The Deep' and off into 'The Narrow Way' only to be undone when this quietens distinctly and cuts after 5 min. 25 sec. After a two-second break, we hear the final 1 min. 52 sec. of 'Behold The Temple Of Light'. Is is a matter for interpretation, but some might perceive that 'Behold' is only about a minute and a half long, meaning that we have a very small segment of 'The Labyrints Of Auximines'. 'The End Of The Beginning' only lasts for an unhappy 42 seconds before side A ends. Side B duplicates 'Behold The Temple Of Light', and is followed by a far more distinguished - almost complete - 'The End Of The Beginning'. This cuts (for want of a surprise) and after a couple of seconds a rousing encore of 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' ends the tape on a high. The only (legitimate!) dialogue on the tape then follows admidst rapturous applause: Roger: Thank you, thank you. Bye-bye. 'The Journey' minus very sensible edits lasts 38 min. 53 sec. (including duplication). The extent of edits on this recording is perhaps best seen as an attempt by the person recording to gain maximum highlights when taping onto a 60 minute reel. The quality of compact-cassette recorders at the time was truly terrible - that of a Dictaphone. The quality of this recording suggests the use of a reel-to-reel. Perhaps it is too easy to forget the problems facing a would-be archivist at the time. The equipment was portable in that it could fit into a handbag or bag, and due to the limited size of a compact machine, any single reel would have been limited to 60 minutes - or less; it is likely that our Mancunian friend had one (used!) tape, and so was forced to be selective in their efforts.
