Useful software for doing a lossless compression and ripping audio CDs:
Exact Audio Copy (the best way how to rip your audio CD on your HDD - don't forget it needs to be set up properly)

Monkey Audio (the APE compression/decompression/verifycation)
FLAC (the FLAC compression/decompression/verifycation)
